Workshop:
Autism Awareness
Wellman 202
Monday, April 20th
7:30-9:00 PM
Spearker: Susan Bacalman
MSW, LCSW
Licensed clinical social worker
UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute
We all are probably familiar with the term Autism, but what is it really, and how does it affect you. Well, autism is today one of them most developmental disorders, specifically autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In California the rates are staggering with a estimated 1 out of 150 children being diagnosed with some form or the disorder, including Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). This is a big deal and it affects all of us because it means that more children are growing up with impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. This means that these children will never be able to reach their full potential or experience the world in the ways you and me are able too. When children receive an earlier diagnosis, it enables them to receive earlier intervention, which can lead to better outcomes. Speaker Susan Bacalman, who is a Licensed clinical social worker at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute, will be coming to speak to us about the symptoms, possible causes, forms and possible treatments strategies of autism. So come on out to learn how to be the voice for those who have no choice.
